Changes Coming to RTC ACCESS

RTC Vehicle

The RTC is making changes to its ACCESS service based on limited financial resources in October. ACCESS is the RTC's paratransit service that provides door-to-door, pre-scheduled transportation for people who are eligible under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The RTC has been operating additional service beyond what is required by the ADA. Starting October 1, the RTC will offer only ADA required service within the ADA zone.

Additionally, the RTC operates ACCESS service 24hoursaday. With the new changes, service will only be offered in the ADArequired area by time of day, meaning the RTC will operate ACCESS service only during the same hours as RTC's fixed route service. For example, if a passenger lives within 3/4 of a mile of an RTC RIDE route that does not operate past 10 p.m. on a Sunday, a trip on RTC ACCESS would not be available on Sunday.

RTC ACCESS passengers living within the ADA service area will no longer be able to purchase trips outside of the ADAzone service area, which is within 3/4 of a mile of a fixed-route bus stop.

To supplement the changes, the RTC is bolstering its Washoe Senior Ride program. The program allows seniors and Veterans who meet certain age requirements, and ACCESS qualified riders, to purchase discounted (75% off) coupons called Taxi Bucks to help cover the cost of taxi rides. Oftentimes, due to the subsidized taxi fares, it's cheaper for someone to take a cab versus an ACCESS ride, depending on the distance the person is traveling. Additionally, it can be more convenient for someone to take a taxi because they have not scheduled their trip ahead of time as required with ACCESS service.

Other transportation options for eligible riders include service offered by the Sierra Nevada Transportation Coalition (SNTC) called Lyft Bucks, Access to Healthcare Network and Medical Transportation Management (MTM) for Medicaid users.

SNTC riders pay $10 and receive a $40 digital Lyft gift card sent to their email within two business days. Lyft Bucks rides can be scheduled 24hoursaday/ 7daysaweek.

Access to Healthcare Network provides FREE non-emergent medical transportation to low income, disabled, and senior residents of Washoe County. MTM service is non-emergency transportation only available to state Medicaid members.
