Gemini AI by Google Gains Auto Memory for User Preferences

seniorspectrumnewspaper – Google is rolling out major updates to its Gemini AI assistant, including automatic memory for user preferences and a new private chat feature. Until now, Gemini only remembered details if prompted by the user. Soon, it will be able to recall key information from past interactions automatically, allowing for more natural and relevant conversations.

Google describes the update as a step toward making Gemini feel like a collaborative partner who already understands your needs. The automatic memory feature will launch first on the Gemini 2.5 Pro model, with support for 2.5 Flash to follow. However, the rollout will exclude users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK due to regulatory considerations.

When the feature becomes available, it will be turned on by default. Users who prefer not to share past information with Gemini can disable this setting by going to Settings > Personal context and switching off “Your past chats with Gemini.” This memory update reflects a broader trend among AI chatbots. Competitors like ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta AI have already introduced memory capabilities to enhance personalized interactions. With this move, Gemini aligns itself with the standard while offering users more control over how their data is used.

Temporary Chats and Activity Tab Changes Enhance Privacy

In addition to memory updates, Google is introducing a Temporary Chat mode designed for conversations that should not be remembered. Chats in this mode will not affect future responses and will not appear in chat history or activity logs. To start a Temporary Chat, users can click the side panel and tap the dotted-window icon.

This feature closely mirrors OpenAI’s privacy-focused “Temporary Chat” mode for ChatGPT, giving users more flexibility in how they interact with AI tools. Google is positioning Temporary Chat as an easy way to explore topics or ask sensitive questions without impacting long-term personalization.

Google also announced that it is renaming “Gemini Apps Activity” to “Keep Activity.” This updated tab will continue to store all past chats and allow users to disable or delete their history. Notably, even if you disable this activity tracking, Google will retain all chats—including those in Temporary mode—for 72 hours. This short retention period ensures platform safety and allows Google to process user feedback. After the renaming, all previous settings from Gemini Apps Activity will carry over to Keep Activity automatically. This ensures a smooth transition for users who already manage their chat history and privacy settings.

With these updates, Google aims to enhance user experience while maintaining clear data control options. By introducing features that mirror industry standards while adding its own privacy framework, Gemini is taking steps to become a more intelligent and trustworthy assistant. These changes also signal Google’s continued focus on ethical AI development and user transparency as its AI tools evolve.
